If you're trying to escape stress and find tranquillity, perhaps immersed in nature removed from the chaos and noise of city traffic, practising some sport or simply spending your days at the search of naturalistic beauties... then what you are seeking is the peace of the Isola del Giglio, in the province of Grosseto.
In spring, from April till June, the bird migration period in the Isola del Giglio, one of the seven islands of the Tuscan archipelago, becomes an incredible natural display. It is in this period, in fact, when summer chaos does not reach its peak that you can discover the island and its marvels: the flowering and the passages of bird species.
In the sea surrounding the island, for scuba diving lovers, there are many shipwrecks a bit all around the coast, dozens of ships that sunk whilst trying to reach land in various historic times. The most interesting one is definitely the one at sea form the Campese bay, which dates back to 600 BC and presumably arrived from ancient Greece. Inside, in fact, amphorae, cups and armours.
If on the other hand you prefer not to swim through the wrecks, you will find a limpid and surprising sea awaiting you. Indents, bays and falaises follow each other along the whole perimeter of the island: cala degli Alberi, Punta Tamburo and the Falesie della Vena are just some of the inspiring places you can come across.
If you want to explore the island and discover its nature, you will find even more surprises. A flora that varies from the strawberry tree to heather, with the unusual presence of chestnuts, and the predominance of the Mediterranean bush to which we can add Aleppo pine, planted to reforestation of the island because of the many and always devastating fires that take place on the island in the summer period.
Amongst the green you can come across wild rabbits as well as wide and diversified species of migratory and nesting birds who choose the Isola del Giglio as their haven. And then the various inhabitants of the cliffs: cormorants, red partridges, shags, seagulls, kestrels and the Raven.
