The State Road connecting Pistoia to the mountain rises slowly leaving the valley enclosing Prato, Florence and Pistoia behind, reaching the Abetone. And precisely along the Statale you will meet small villages «set» into the Pistoia Appennine: Gavinana, san Marcello until reaching the valle della Lima, in Cutigliano, just 14 kilometres away from the skiing resort.

A small town of medieval origin where time seems to have passed leaving no tangible traces. A single narrow road crosses the village climbing up to Cutigliano and, cutting through the little central square, continues until the Melo and ends at the Doganaccia (in the picture a photograph of a winter sunset), over 1600 metres high.

The small central square, piazza Catilina, is dominated by an oak tree which, in the summer period gives out wonderful freshness, the road from the square heads towards the inside of the ancient village meeting the 15th century palazzo Pretorio.

The latter represent the evidence from one of the three residences of the «Mountain captains» which arrived to present days. Almost a hundred family coats of arms in stone and glassed polychrome terracotta, built between 1400 and 1700,  make the façade of the palace precious.

The Loggia of the market where once the «Mountain captains», using a stone bench, redacted notary acts and carried out administrative or legislation procedures  and again the «colonna del Marzocco» built next to the Loggia was the symbol of the Florentine republic.

Finally the Chiesa della Madonna and that of San Bartolomeo enrich the historical patrimony of Cutigliano: the former inside the ancient village and the latter, built over various historical periods, is outside of the inhabited hub.
