   Chianti Rùfina and Pomino

The sweet hills that form a frame of green around the east of Florence in a continuation of country churches, towers and castles that lose themselves in the Valdisieve host the road of the wines «Chianti Rùfina e Pomino», the first wine road constituted in Tuscany.

The promoting Consortium gathers twenty four companies, producers and service providers, included are holiday farms, hotels, restaurants, wine cellars and craftsmen, all bound by the spirit of promotion and valorisation of the territory as cultural and local identity.

The production territory recognised as production area for the Chianti Rùfina is the one comprised in the municipalities of Rùfina, Pontassieve, Pelago, Londa and Dicomano, with an extension of over 12 thousand hectares. And the companies constituting the Chianti Rùfina consortium, chaired by Ferninando Frescobaldi, represent the totality of the production with an average yearly quantity of 25 thousand hectolitres of wine.

The disciplinary regulating the production of Chianti Rùfina sees the use of Sangiovese grapes (from 75 to 100%) and in portions reduced to 10% the grapes of Canaioli nero, Trebbiano toscano and Malvasia del chianti, the result is the chianti wine Rùfina DOCG with a minimum aging of 8 months for the year and two years for the reserve, of bright red ruby colour, an intense wine scent and a harmonic and dry taste. Another Doc recognised production is that of the Vin santo del Chianti Rùfina, of a colour that goes from straw-coloured yellow to golden, from intense amber, a very intense perfume and velvety and dry taste, though always sweetish.

Wine is the undisputed protagonist of the area, but if we travel along the Valdisieve, accompanied by the slow flowing of the river Sieve, we discover a world comprised in the four trails indicated by the wine consortium of art and culture. From the remains of the Etruscan walls of Poggio Frascole, the romanic country church of S. Maria between Londa and Dicomano; the villa of Poggio Reale and the Medici bridge of Pontassieve, the castle of Nipozzano or the sanctuary of the Madonna della Pieve.

To enrich the patrimony of the wine road, the opening, almost two years ago, of the «Enoteca del Chianti Rùfina» in the splendid villa of Poggio Reale in Rùfina, probably designed by Michelangelo and had built by the Mormorai in the 16th century. Inside the wine cellar a space dedicated to the tasting of all the wine productions of the Chianti Rùfina, to which they combine the sampling of traditional local products and a space called «pecorinoteca» reserved for the tasting of the Tuscan pecorino. The enoteca is open from Tuesday to Saturday 2 pm till 7 pm. And still inside the villa is the «Museo della vite e del vino». Finally soon there will be, in the Poggio Reale villa, the meeting point that can provide all tourists with information and useful news to visit the Chianti wine road, as well as being able to book the holiday farms and tasting in the cellars.
