Monteregio wine in Massa Marittima
In the province of Grosseto there are three wine routes: the wine roads «Colli di Maremma», «Monteregio di Massa Marittima» and the wine route «Montecucco».
Of these, the road of the Monteregio wine, established in July 1998, as well as its importance on a food and wine level, also gathers a richness for art, culture and environment that is very interesting.
The name of the road derives from the D.O.C area Monteregio di Massa Marittima, established in 1994 and including the municipalities of Roccastrada, Massa Marittima, Scarlino, Follonica, Monterotondo marittimo, Gavorrano, Castiglione della Pescaia and the community of the Colline Metallifere.
The road extends into the territory of the higher Grosseto Maremma and the colline Metallifere, revealing throughout its path wine and farm holiday businesses, traditional restaurants, craftsmen's shops and wine bars. A trail that last year was enriched with another jewel: The Museum of the Roccastrada vine and wine.
Opened the 7th of September 2001 the museums gives, as well as the highlighting of local production, a strong artistic contribution. Inside the rooms of the museum, in piazza dell'Orologio, there is an exhibition area dedicated to the ancient art of wine-making; a second one, excavated inside the rock, is a museum gallery with ancient wine barrels and tools for vine cultivation.
Inside the wine road there are three itineraries, suggested by the committee, to discover the artistic, environmental and cultural richness of the area. The micro-trail «A» leads to the discovery of towns such as Massa Marittima, a true jewel of medieval town planning: from the splendid central square up through the alleys that climb onto the Cassero tower near the ancient gate for Siena.
And then along the coast, the micro-trail «C»: the regional natural reserve of the Bandite di Scarlino and that of Diaccia Botrona and the archaeological area of Vetulonia; and finally the micro-trail «B» in the municipality of Roccastrada and the Colline Metallifere.
The information centre for the Monteregio wine road is in Massa Marittima in via Norma Parenti (tel 0566/902756), and it supplies all the information regarding events, businesses and happenings of the Monteregio wine area.
