   Moses Levy's seasons
From the 14th July till the 6th October 2002 Seravezza, Lucca's Palazzo Mediceo dedicates the wide retrospective «Le stagioni del colore» to Tunisian born artist Moses Levy, protagonist of Italian art between the '800 e '900 and an important figure in Tuscany.

The event introduces a group of drawings that belong to Levy's first production and around 130 drawings that show significant moments of his artistic activity.

Moses Levy spent much of his time in Versilia, Viareggio, and Tunisia, places where the artist borrowed the subjects for his work. Light and colour situations of a mundane Viareggio, magical North African atmospheres and poetic visions of countries he visited, from Spain to Paris to Venice.

Moses Levy's pictorial style finds an essential element in colour, treated with exceptional awareness, nourished by his culture, which is in his own personal way re-elaborates some basic suggestions of French post-impressionism, from «Cloissonisme», to fauves, to Matisse and Cézanne.

The exhibition reconstructs Levy's artistic history starting from the "post-macchiaiola" stage, where he was still receptive to the influence of Fattori's stroke and contemporary painting tradition in Tuscany. Closeness to artists of the Roman Secession will bring in new elements to his painting, already mature for talent, also removing it from the original divisionism inclinations in favour of a "structural" use of colour.

Levy reaches his own style where many cultural influences merge, from Alberto Magri's primitivism to Fattori and Viani's strength of stroke, the chromatic and structural intensity of the French post-impressionist and the fauves. The exhibition documents Levy's knowledge of the orientalist tradition, as well his interest for Cézanne which distinguishes his painting in the Thirties and after the second world war.
