Giovanni Fattori, master of the «Macchia»
Livorno dedicates the exhibition «Dal segno alla macchia. I disegni di Giovanni Fattori nelle collezioni civiche di Livorno» to the great master of the «macchia» Giovanni Fattori. An anthology, offering drawings touching the artist's whole production range: from early academic drawings to sketches of military figures and preparatory drawings for large canvases of Risorgimento battles.
Also present are other subjects dear to Fattori such as animals, or every day life scenes with farmers and coalmen, greengrocers and «gabbrigiane», built on the plastic vigour of the sign. The exhibitive trail is carried out in five sections proposing 146 masterpieces, recently restored, of the 217 papers that make up the production, property of the Museo Civico di Livorno.

A first section of 78 drawings, made between May and June 1859, represent the «Battaglie del Risorgimento», a real-life study of soldiers and military life. The single figures are stylistically characterised in assertive and strong depictions, where Fattori analyses each figure in the most scrupulous details.

A second section dedicated to «Life in military camps», 13 drawings that represent soldiers, as well as farmers and «butteri» (Cowboys of Maremma), protagonists of everyday drama. The third section is dedicated to «La vita, il lavoro e la fatica quotidiana: i butteri» (Life, work and everyday strains: the butteri) which ties in without continuity with the next, dedicated to animals, both topics that have constantly attracted the artist. Finally «Sentimento della figura» with works created between 1847 and the 1860. It is basically dealing with portraits and historical figures.
