Sunday 10th March saw the opening of the anthological exhibition dedicated to Antonio Ligabue in the Galleria Comunale d'Arte Contemporanea in Arezzo. In the «Antonio Ligabue nel centenario della nascita» collection over 85 works are exhibited, between oil paintings, drawings, sculptures and graphics coming from public and private collections.
The Arezzo exhibition is edited by Luigi Cavallo, Marzio Dall'Acqua, Giovanni Faccenda and Vittorio Sgarbi, and offers a very accurate choice of the works selected by the «Centro Studi & Archivio Antonio Ligabue» in Parma, the most reliable and credited reckoning point on the Emilian painter.
Antonio Ligabue was born in Zurich, in 1899. His childhood is marked by restiveness, misery and poor health. He then moves to Gualtieri, in Emilia, his father's home region where he will die in 1965. A restiveness which has always distinguished Ligabue, the «buon selvaggio» of Italian painting, leading him throughout the years to a sort of alienation, though redeemed by his great artistic genius which could transform nightmares in enchanted colourful visions, the orderly lines of poplars in jungles inhabited by wild beasts.
Ligabue's works are loud and dense, they exude nostalgia, fear and excitement, equally meticulous in farming life scenes as in exotic forests, drawn in the former from the depth of an incredible visual memory, in the latter from an even more prodigious imagination.
