Italian universities, since last year have been breathing anew air: a reform of academic studies to uniform Italian scholastic paths to the European legislation. The new degree courses will keep students busy for three years, then the new graduates will be able to access two-year specialisation courses. And then doctorates and master degrees just like English universities.
New degree courses are also born in Tuscan universities: in Florence, Siena and Pisa. The reform means the renewal of the ordainment of pre-existing degree courses and the starting of new ones on the basis of requests of the localised professional market.
In Pisa, starting form the academic year 2001/2002, at the Medicine Department the “Pharmacy” courses have been adapted, as well as "Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology " and "Scientific Information on the Drug "; and there are many new study programs in "Herbalist Techniques", "Drug quality control" and "Analytical Socio-Environmental Toxicology ".
Herbalist techniques can be attended in Pisa and in Florence, and its aim is to graduate a technician who can follow the stages of production, working and trading of herbalist and officinal plants. Also, the graduate will have skills on active principles and effects of medicinal plants. Therefore this is knowledge that spaces into pharmaceutical fields, as well as cosmetic and nutritional as concerns plants, placing attention for the valorisation and defence of spontaneous officinal flora.
The degree course at the Department of Pharmacy of the University of Pisa is at free number without obligation of attendance, with an external training stage in companies, studies or professional labs and research institutes. The outlet in a professional context is a job in the herbalist environment.
