«I Macchiaioli. Opere e protagonisti di una rivoluzione artistica (1861-1869)», is the title of the exhibition that stays open till the end of October at the Castello Pasquini of Castiglioncello (Livorno).
Around 80 masterpieces created by the highest representatives of the macchiaioli trend: Fattori, Signorini, Abbati, Lega and Sernesi, from major national museums and some large private collections. Works created from 1861 into the following decade, years where the pictorial current reaches its most mature results.
The first section (of the four the exhibit is subdivided in) documents the works created in Castiglioncello and Piagentina in the 19th century sixties, completed by a second part titled «La villa Martelli». The latter is a virtual video reconstruction (through relief, period planimetries, macchiaioli paintings and ancient photographs), of the country villa of art critic Diego Martelli, whose house became the elected discussion place for artists and intellectuals of the time.
The second section is expressly dedicated to Raffaello Sernesi and permits making a critical point on the artists in the impossibility of finding the number of works that would be required for significant retrospective.
«Il cenacolo di Piagentina», collects the works of artists who operated, in the summer, in villa Martelli di Castiglioncello and stayed in the Florentine countryside from Porta La Croce, giving life to the «cenacolo di Piagentina», overseen by Silvestro Lega’s charismatic figure. The fourth and last section is dedicated to the brief, albeit significant, activity of the Macchiaioli newspaper: the «Gazzettino delle arti del disegno».
