The tie binding Colle Val d'Elsa to crystal is evidenced by history, albeit today the financial implications are those that stand out. The activities concerning this precious material is indeed the main resource of the town in the province of Siena and it gives work to thousands of people. And not only this. The companies of the Colle area, from craftsmen's to huge names in the sector, produce the almost totality of Italian crystal and 14 per cent of the world's.
These flattering results bury find their roots in full Medieval times. Already halfway through the XIV century, as can be understood from a number of tollbooths which were built for the taxation of the glass and vase production, Colle stands out for its working of glass. In the ensuing centuries, this artisan activity reaches such a degree of perfection that it dominates a wide geographical range. Towards the end of the XVI century, for example, the Grand Duke of Florence, worried about the industrial competition of other states, promulgates a decree according to which the «foreign» glass was abolished in order to protect the Colle glass makers.
In Colle Val d'Elsa, however, the modern glass industry is born later, in the first years of the 19th century, upon initiative of some families from France. The choice of these pioneers falls on the «city of Arnolfo» because of its many woods in the surrounding area and for the possibility of easily achieving the essential raw materials for the production such as quartz, manganese and barium, as well as the marble from the nearby «montagnola senese».
When the French experiment fails, German Schmid takes over and, half way through the 19th century, introduces the fabrication of crystal. In a few years the Colle product acquires great renown, while in the factories various specialised workers of the area start taking part in the production. Upon Schmid's death the industry goes through a decadent period, which is surpassed between 1917 and 1921. Precisely in the latter date, the two existing factories merge in a single complex under the knowing guide of Colle Val d'Elsa born Modesto Boschi. From the dismantling of this company various establishments are created, some of which have continued their activity until today.
