Ancient thermal baths in Bagno Vignoni
Lorenzo il Magnifico, Papa Pio II Piccolomini and many other travellers who followed the via Francigena knew and appreciated the benefits of the Thermal waters of Bagno Vignoni, a small town in the province of Siena.

A small thermal centre that was already known to the Romans, traces of whom can still be seen in the system of the great rectangular pool representing the heart of the town around which, throughout the centuries, the shops, dwellings and the little church were built, the centre of Bagno Vignoni.

A colonnade around the pool named after Santa Caterina, who spent much of her time precisely in the thermal centre, creates the ideal frame for the inspiring square of the historical centre. A town that certainly deserves a visit: the structure was left basically unchanged throughout the centuries, despite the wars that took place during the Middle Ages and involved the whole of Val d'Orcia, and gives the typical connotation to the village.

Also you must visit the church of San Giovanni Battista, in the corner of the hot water pool, where you can admire a fragment of the restored fresco attributed to Ventura Salimbeni, the «Cristo risorto», originally kept in the Santa Caterina’s chapel, under the colonnade. Coming out of the centre of town, following the flow of the waters, you reach the panoramic area, a view that stretches onto the val d'Orcia and the river by the same name running through the valley.

Also recently restored by the Municipality of San Quirico the «Parco dei mulini», a small area where there were some mills powered by the pools’ waters which meant, in the mid-fifties, an important economic resource for the Sienese town. A visit to Bagno Vignoni is a must, not neglecting nearby San Quirico d'Orcia, Pienza and Montepulciano and the natural beauty of the whole Val d'Orcia district.
