How many times have we heard about cities congested with traffic, long car queues that throw a city completely into chaos? And how many times have you caught yourself dreaming, immersed in the most hectic traffic jams, of having a bicycle to leave behind everything and escape through the cars?
Precisely to avoid the chaotic traffic of the city and visit them easily by bike, in 1998 the municipality of Florence started a project, activated as an experiment in the summers of 1999 and 2000, which can now be used in some towns in the Tuscany region and is currently being expanded in others.
«Bicitrenobici», this the name of the initiative, offers the possibility to tourists and residents to take the train and, upon arrival, use a bike to move in the historical centre and visit it at ease. This is the proposal born of the association between the company Trenitalia, the direction of the Tuscany Regional Transportation, provinces and municipalities of the region as well as the Park organisations.
The service is practical, in fact it is enough to show a valid return train ticket, and an ID or passport. This will enable you to enjoy the use of a bicycle which will have to be returned the same day without any added costs beside that of the train ticket.
It is always advisable to book the service, surfing on the internet site of «Bicitrenobici» you can book via e-mail, alternatively call the arrival locations. Currently the service is active, on Saturdays and Sundays, towards the towns of Pisa with excursions in the Regional Park of San Rossore and in Talamone towards the Regional Park of Maremma; to Stia, for excursions into the Parco delle Foreste casentinesi, monte Falterona, Campigna where it is active every day. Briefly the service will be activate din Florence as well.
Other destinations that will be activated soon are some cities of art Toscana (Lucca, Arezzo, Pistoia) within the end of the year; whereas in March, when the temperatures will be more favourable, destinations on the coast will be started.
