Materiali Sonori, a creativity crèche
Materiali Sonori, a label born in 1977 in San Giovanni Valdarno, is one of the most beautiful and significant experiences of the whole Italian discography. Created and directed by Giampiero Bigazzi, Lucia Baldini, Arlo Bigazzi and Francesca Pieraccini, ever since its beginning it showed its International dimension and its vocation for contemporary music, experimental rock, ethnic music: "border" music, which go beyond fashions and genres, mostly instrumental music, but also supports for poetical lyrics, soundtracks for cinema and theatre, fusion sounds, cultured and uncultured music, post-modern.
Brave choices, though widely compensated by the fruits yielded by these 24 years in business: the appreciation of a wide International audience, collaborations with prestigious labels and artists (among the former Talking Heads and Madonna's Sire/Warner, among the latter Brian Eno, David Sylvian, Jon Hassell, Nusrah Fateh Ali Khan, Wim Mertens, etc.), the progressive and cautious growth and diversification of their catalogue.
Attention to strategic choices is a key point in Materiali Sonori's history; and it couldn't be otherwise, for a company which, from the beginning has worked on limited budgets. Hence some esthetical and productive choices (cd packaging, recordings, etc.), which far from negatively influencing the brand's quality, have on the other hand risen its status and the awareness of it.
Another interesting element is given by the Big Catalogue, a mail-order catalogue, where records can be found also by labels with a similar musical attentiveness as Materiali Sonori. Among recent years activities it is worth remebering the New Classics collection (with reinterpretations by Rota, Gershwin, Piazzolla, etc.), some International productions ("Sulla strada", "Marco Polo", etc.) and the internet site, that has even got its own on-line sales.
Oh, and if you're looking for a record that will lead you harmless through the oncoming autumn into December festivities try and listen to "Fellini" by Harmonia Ensemble. Who's producing it? Try and guess...
