The white peaks of Tuscany
Peaks that rise up towards the sky and covered in every season, even in the summer, of a thin white veil. We’re not speaking of the glaciers of the Alpine circle in northern Italy, but of the only mountain group which, in Tuscany, can rightfully call itself by that name, «Alps», because of their morphology: the Alpi Apuane. A mountainous group that extends in the provinces of Massa Carrara and Lucca, a highly interesting natural area that went on to become, in 1985, a regional park with the aim to protect the huge patrimony of flora and fauna.
Almost enchanted places that transcend form the everyday like the spectacular antro del Corchia and the monte Forato, the marble quarries, where the prized material is still derived from today, as well as paths and trails such as the anello delle Panie and the «Marmitte dei Giganti».
To discover all the marvels concealed in this area you can, or rather you should, visit the Park of the Alpi Apuane acocmpanied by the park’s guides, professional experts who can accompany individual tourists or groups, leading them through the discovery of the various itineraries and competently illustrating the environmental characteristics.
Also, in this time of year, there are various initiatives promoted by the park organization for tourists and mountain lovers. Information can be gathered from the «Centri documentazione e accoglienza visitatori». Currently, operational ones are those in Seravezza (+39 0584 75 61 44) and Castelnuovo Garfagnana (+39 0583 64 42 42) in the province of Lucca, and the centre in Forno di Massa (+39 0585 31 53 00), in the province of Massa Carrara.
