Medieval times return at the Gallo nero
Not far from Piazza del Campo, in the historical centre of Siena, in via del Porrione, the dining table brings back 15th century Siena, with the restaurant Gallo nero offering a list of dishes that faithfully follow the recipes of Medieval times. Three halls, a large central one, a hall-cellar and a hall at the second floor, welcome up to 140 places both for lunch (from 12 to 3.30 pm) and for dinner (from 7.00 pm to 1.00 am).

«Five years ago – the restaurant’s managers explained – when in  '96 the place was a restaurant-pizzeria, a fire exploded that destroyed almost everything. From there, building up the interiors, the idea was born of offering something different from all restaurants; so we eliminated the pizzeria and left space to the restaurant adding a touch of originality with the medieval menu ».

So the «Middle ages ŕ la carte» is the card up the sleeve of the Gallo Nero restaurant: a menu that offers «ravioli all'anatra» (in medieval cuisine, the ravioli were not filled pasta, but small gnocchi prepared with cheeses), filled baby pork, medieval cakes and spiced wine.

Gallo Nero is not just a medieval cuisine, the traditional menu also offers the tasty classic dishes of Tuscan cuisine: soups, pici, scottiglia and fiorentina and, as dessert, cantuccini with vinsanto. The choice of wines, all Tuscan, is limited, but as the restaurant’s director said «there are about 100 labels, few but of excellent quality, all Nobel wines, Chianti and traditional labels of the area ».

Starting in October the restaurant will organise every Friday a medieval party, so don’t be surprised if entering the Gallo Nero you will find jesters in 15th century clothing welcoming you at the door. To take part in the parties you need to book, but we advise you to book in any case. All credit cards are accepted and the cost of traditional menu goes from 14 to 23 euro (excluding wines), whereas for medieval dinners you will go from a minimum of 20 euro (inclusive of local Chianti to taste) up to 75 euro for banquets on reservation.
