A journey through Val d'Orcia discovering the thermal of the Monte Amiata, good cuisine and culinary traditions of this area of the Siena province.
In a building dating back to 1200, right in the centre of one of the most scenic thermal towns in the area, Bagni San Filippo, the osteria «Lo Spugnone», was opened little more than a year ago by the young and friendly Tiberio Pasqualini and Matteo Braccianti.
In the cosy and comfortable atmosphere of the «Spugnone» you can delight your taste buds with the recipes from a menu based on the «poor» dishes of the monte Amiata cuisine, traditional of the Val d'Orcia: delicious first courses such as the «pici con le briciole» (long thick spaghetti with crumbs) and «acquacotta» (cooked water); second courses belong to farmers' tradition with «fagioli con le cotiche» (beans and pork rind) to the really tasty grilled vegetables and anchovies in pesto sauce (and when we say pesto, we naturally mean the Tuscan recipe, not the Ligurian one).
However, not just traditional Val d'Orcia cuisine, the cellar is also well supplied of local labels from wine businesses in the area as well as some Montepulciano productions: Nobile and Brunello. Average price for a dinner, excluding the wine, varies between 15 and 18 euro.
The osteria «Lo Spugnone» accommodates around 30 - 40 people in the three internal rooms and, during the summer, about 20 more in the little square in front of the restaurant, it is therefore advisable to book calling the number 0577-87 20 30.
The restaurant stays open during the winter from 1130 to 1530 and from 1730 until late at night; during the summer from 1130 until night time, closed Tuesdays . Also, during the summer there will be musical evenings in the little square front of the osteria.
