According to an ancient legend the necklace that Venus, the mythical goddess of beauty, broke and the pearls decorating the collier fell into the sea, and these, coming into contact with the waters of the Tyrrhenian sea, transformed in seven islands. And precisely with the name of Venus Pearls the seven islands are known that make up the Tuscan archipelago.
The largest in the archipelago, 18 kilometres wide and 27 long, is the Elba Island, known also as the iron island and of Napoleon Bonaparte. Among the beaches, coves and bays alternating along the Elba coast you’re just left stuck for choice about where to sunbath for while. For lovers of a sandy coast, a stop you cannot miss is definitely the gulf of Fetovaia, a place in the municipality of Campo nell'Elba.
Fetovaia can be easily reached by car or using the island’s public transport, when you reach Fetovaia you descend along the only tarmac road that leads down to the beach for about 700 metres, where you can leave the car in a parking area (average fee is of 5 euro).
If you wish to spend a day in Fetovaia we advise you, in the summer months of July, August and September, to avoid going to the beach on a Sunday, a day in which the sand strip really becomes “human bedlam”; in August, on the other hand, every day the beach is overcrowded.
The Fetovaia gulf is a sand strip of about 200 metres, the bottom decreases gradually starting from the seashore, so it is particularly suitable for families with children and for those who still don’t have an excellent “relationship” with water.
The beach is equipped with two organised beaches who hire beach umbrellas and sun chairs as well as pedal-boats, acquascooters, surf boards and kayaks to leave the shore and enjoy a nice bath where the water is deeper and offers a splendid view on the clean sea-bottom of the small gulf. Also self -service and bar/newsstand services are available.
On the sea shore there is also a free beach area.
