The Lion King
Mario Cipollini, 165 victories as a professional cyclist of which 34 in the Giro d'Italia, is one of Tuscany’s sports personalities who have succeeded in taking the name of their city, Lucca, into the whole world. And for this reason the prize "Lucca nello Sport" was designed, the first edition of which went to him: the legendary "Lion King", unchallenged master of every final sprint arrival. The bond between the bicycle and the Lucca born is very strong. Could you explain why? «Lucca is an extremely special and beautiful city. The town structure, the historical centre enclosed inside the walls and the cycling paths allow it to be visited in ways different from other cities. It is enough to stroll on a bike on the ancient city walls to enjoy a unique view over the city and at the same time manage to discover its beauties. In fact as soon as I manage to free myself from professional commitments I always try to go there». Could you recommend a particular cycling path in the Lucca area? «I would say that the landscape is so vast and the possibilities offered by the territory are so many.. Depending on one’s own cycling potential one can choose the mountain trails, which are special and fascinating. But you can follow itineraries among the Lucca hills that are quite simple and immersed in the green of nature that surrounds the whole city. And also, as I know what Tuscany has to offer, I speak of the coast area as well as the hills and the mountains, so you have the possibility of doing anything you wish. As far as I am concerned, I find it particularly pleasant to train in my land of origin ».
