The premises of the association are the most telling symbol of the feeling animating «Lucchesi nel mondo»: the castle of Porta San Pietro, the obligatory route of access into the city, in the 500’s, between «Lucca dentro e Lucca fora» (Lucca inside and Lucca outside). The association, founded in 1968, currently has contacts widespread over the five continents.
And the strong tie that binds the immigrants has never slackened, the need to recall the Tuscan land, the culture, the traditions, they are kept alive by association. A work which is not just of coordination and support for immigrants, but gives useful information on the rights and duties, to protect and favour the integration of families abroad and in Italy, promote artistic and cultural activities, solicit and ease trade and industrial meetings.
In Brussels there is one of the most ancient communities of Lucca born; the need to leave the city was perceived first by silk merchants who, around the XIII century, started relations with the foreign countries, particularly in the Flanders, where the presence was always very strong. The direction of extra-European travels was perceived only in 1800, discovering the new continent and an ensuing flow that can be pin pointed in the post war period, when many moved to the American lands, rich and totally unscathed by the damages pof war.
The association with seat in Brussels has set up, in association with Lucca’s Chamber of Commerce Industry Crafts and Agriculture the contest «Lucca born who distinguished themselves abroad ». A prize for all those immigrants who have obtained merits in a professional, cultural, social or artistic context.
