Siena, a city of ancient traditions, resting on the Tuscan hills, immersed in the green of the fields and the dark lands of the Crete Senesi.
An historical centre develops on roads, alleys and small squares in a continual up and down. Siena, a city that withholds her history among her walls, has reached the final stage of the prestigious International Prize «Stockholm Partnerships for Sustainable Cities». The Swedish prize has the objective of valorising the most interesting and original projects in the field of sustainable development in cities the world over.
The city of Siena has taken part with a project that is the synthesis of all the initiatives which have involved the city of the Palio in the past few years. «A medieval city projected into the future» - this is the name of the project promoted by Siena - is the result of the efforts and the innovations brought to the city in the last few years.
In the project therefore, on one hand technological innovations are emphasised, as well as sustainable mobility and the cabling of the town area and the relative services (Siena is the first totally cabled city in Italy). On the other hand there is the connection with the development of the city through an ever more diffused information.
The international prize has selected in total 204 projects for the same number of cities in 51 countries in the world. From the selection 60 finalists emerged who will be prized in the Swedish capital, Stockholm, from the 3rd to the 5th of June 2002.
In the twelve categories the prize "Stockholm Partnerships for Sustainable Cities" is divided in, all the aspects of the sustainable city of the future are emphasised: from technology, to the information society, to the city of children, nature and mobility.
