Holy Friday in Grassina
A tradition dating back almost five centuries ago when a devastating and killer plague epidemic struck, as in many other areas of Italy, also the territories around Florence. The scourge hit causing thousands of victims in the whole area. Only two towns, in the Florentine inlands, remained unscathed: Bagno a Ripoli and Grassina. And to celebrate this providential as well as miraculous event the citizens organised a solemn procession.
The tradition is held alive throughout the centuries; every year, the day of the Holy Friday preceding Easter, the commemoration of the mystical event is repeated. Today it has become a representation interesting for its staging and cultural features which run through the representation. Over 500 walk-ons in historical costume parade along the city ways to reach the Calvary hill, representing scenes of Christ’s life.
The brilliance of the re-evocation is added to by the natural scenery that becomes backdrop for the event; music accompanying the commemoration succeed in framing a moment of unique realism. Therefore, an appointment to mark on the calendar, Grassina’s Holy Friday.
