Montegufoni Castle
Originally belonging to the Ormanni family, starting from the 12th century the castle became the possession of the Acciaioli family, rich Florentine merchants. The complex used to be made up by various independent buildings to accommodate farmers and craftsmen at the service of the lords, whereas the present structure is the result of the re-building in baroque style as willed by Donato Acciaioli towards the end of the 17th century.
Later the villa was enriched with a splendid garden, with caves and water games, which made the place very desirable for meetings and conventions of Florentine nobility and the Medici family themselves. The internal halls were decorated by Agnolo Gori and Alessandro Gherardini.
At the beginning of this century the castle was bought by Englishman Sir George Sitwell, whom after the restoration called Gino Severini to paint his Harlequins in the Acciaioli rooms. Inside the nearby church you can admire a Crucifix by Taddeo Gaddi and Lippo di Benivieni’s Madonna.
The castle is now the property of the Posarelli family, who are current dwellers and owners of the ancient structure since 1972 when the old owner Resbery Sitwell sold the castle to the Posarelli, who immediately started important restoration works, making Montegufoni into a tourist centre that became known throughout the world. The castle still keeps a certain medieval shadow, which merges without conflicts with Renaissance refinement and luminosity. A fascinating bond with history.
